Cultivation and sowing
We recommend planting from October to May. Make sure the soil is not frozen - otherwise there is a risk of root damage and the plant may not survive. The division of the plant should be slightly below the soil surface. It is best to use organic soil.
Harvest
Rose petals are collected very early in the morning, when they have the highest concentration of essential oils.
The content of essential oil varies between 0.02% and 0.04%, rarely reaching 0.09%. Approximately 2 to 3 tons of rose petals are needed to obtain one kilogram of rose oil.
Bulgarian Rosa Damascena – a treasure with over 300 years of tradition
Organic Damascus Rose is characterized by its passionate, almost intoxicating fragrance and colourful flowers. Harvesting its petals in organic quality is a process that requires dexterity and patience. Each blossom is carefully cut by hand and placed in willow baskets, which are then sent to the distilleries.
In September 2014, Bulgarian rose oil received a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) from the EU, underlining its uniqueness and quality.
Cultivated for more than three centuries, the Bulgarian Rosa Damascena is considered the best oil rose in the world. Rose oil and rose water are distilled from the species Rosa Damascena Mill. (subfamily Rosoideae, family Rosaceae).
Its cultivation dates back to the 16th and early 17th centuries. The rose bush lives for approximately 30 years and can reach a height of up to 2 meters. Growing this rose is demanding and requires several important agricultural practices, such as pruning, tilling the soil, harvesting for the winter, turning the soil in the spring, watering, fertilizing and pest control.
The Rose Valley of Kazanlak - the treasure of Bulgaria and the centre of the world's rose oil
The Rose Valley of Kazanlak stretches 10-12 kilometres wide and 95 kilometres long, with an average height of 350 metres and an area of 1895 km². The Kalofer Valley of Roses is the centre of the world's rose oil production. In addition to Kazanlak, there are other important towns such as Karlovo, Sopot, Kalofer and Pavel Banya.
The famous Kazanlak region was once located south of the Balkan Mountains, known among the Slavs as the "Old Mountain". It borders the lower Sredna Gora mountain range to the south. Geologically, the region is formed by two river valleys - the Stryama Valley in the west and the Tundzha Valley in the east.
The unique climate of the mountains and valleys
Atypical weather patterns in this region are linked to wider climate change in Europe, which is now described as the fastest warming continent. Thanks to its specific microclimate, the Rose Valley is considered an exceptional cultural heritage. The cultivation of organic roses here is carefully protected and strictly controlled.
Rose hips and rose oil – two treasures from one plant
Rose hips (flowers that have turned to seeds) are an excellent source of vitamins A, B3, C, D and E. They also contain bioflavonoids, citric acid, flavonoids, fructose, malic acid, tannins and zinc.
Studies show that rose oil accumulates in the liver after oral intake. The accumulation process starts within the first hour and reaches its maximum in about 8 hours. Its excretion occurs mainly through the kidneys.
Clinical studies confirm that rose oil is very well tolerated by patients – no side effects have been reported or observed. Toxicological studies characterize it as a substance with low toxicity, which underlines its safety in use.
In Today's Medicine: The Healing Power of Roses
Rose is a favourite remedy of folk healers and its rose oil has a long history of traditional use in medicine. Today it is used in the treatment of various health problems such as gynecological cramps in PMS, hormonal changes in menopause, urinary tract infections or skin inflammations. The leaves, rose water and attar (concentrated rose oil) have similar uses.
A natural miracle for the skin
Rose oil and rose water are suitable for all skin types, but have the greatest benefit for dry, sensitive and aging skin. Thanks to their toning and astringent effects on the capillaries just below the skin's surface, they help reduce redness caused by their enlargement. However, it is important that the product contains genuine natural rose oil as synthetic ingredients have no therapeutic value.
Rose water is a cheaper yet effective natural cosmetic product. It cleanses and refreshes the skin, soothes irritated skin and acts as a tonic and antiseptic. These properties make rose one of the most valuable helpers in natural medicine and cosmetics.
